Lost dogs often travel farther than you would think! They can wander pretty far, sometimes even over county borders. A good Samaritan may pick up a lost dog and take them to the shelter that’s closest or most convenient for them. Shelters are run separately, so you'll need to contact each one. Don't delay! A "stray" pet is kept for a mandatory hold period – often only several days. After that, if your dog doesn't have a microchip that can be traced back to you, it is either put up for adoption and adopted (permanently) by someone, transferred to a rescue group, or may even be euthanized. Finding your pet within a few days is critical! Equally important -- continue to monitor shelters until your dog is home! The person who found him may decide they no longer want him and take him to a shelter months, even years later. Your dog has already managed to escape once. He may get loose again and end up at the shelter after an extended period of time. Again, it's possible for this be weeks, months, or even years later. Never give up!

This is our attempt to put together a comprehensive list of shelters and humane societies for each county. Please use this as a guide but be sure to ask your animal control unit for a list of any other resources in your area and verify with them directly that the information we have is current and correct.

Please note: Many shelters use www.PetHarbor.com to list their found pets. If your pet has been missing for more than a few days also check "adoptable pets" at shelters and rescues. Your pet may be there.
